When you do get to sleep, you might find that you are woken up again by bad dreams, nightmares or flashbacks about what happened. This can be frightening and stressful, and it might feel like your body is always on high alert for danger.
If you experience this, try the following:
- Turn on the light and get out of bed
- Have a cool flannel by your bed - If you wake up in a cold sweat this can be helpful
- Use grounding techniques
- Use some relaxation exercises
- Follow the other advice about managing sleep problems
Take things one step at a time. Give yourself credit for changes that you make and progress that occurs. These techniques all require perseverance and practice.
